Growing up, I knew I was bound to work somewhere in the health field. Fast-forward 4 years through college when I was in one of my last semesters at Boise State University. One of my favorite teacher’s was teaching a one-time Special Topics class, Sports Nutrition. I was interested in the topic before the class started, but I had no idea it would have such an impact on my idea of a career. By then I was too far through school to turn around and start a new degree, so I started a new plan. This December I graduated with a Kinesiology degree with an emphasis in Exercise Science, with a Biology minor. In order for us to fulfill our degree, we must complete an internship consisting of 135 hours. Having the knowledge I wanted to move into the nutrition world, with the help from some professors, I scored Chelsea Schoenfelder’s email. A few weeks and emails later, I was granted the opportunity to intern 90 of my 135 hours with the Idaho Dairy Council.
Arriving my first day, it was like starting a new job… having no idea what you are doing or what to expect. But immediately, this team showed me the family they are, and the family they are to the community. They threw me right in, working side by side with the dieticians in the Health and Wellness sector, as well as showing me the rest of the marketing and promotion side of the Idaho Dairy Council. Through the journey they took me on my first trip to a dairy farm, and I was actually able to put the milk machine on a cow. I also attended an educational meeting with them learning about how cheese and yogurt are processed, and how whey is processed from the milk.
They also offered me the opportunity to venture off into the community working with other areas of health and wellness. They arranged for me to work with an array of dieticians in the community to observe the different areas of dietetic work. I was able to observe community healthy dieticians with WIC and Albertson’s, and a dietician who works with the CORE Group.
Every experience I have had with or through the Idaho Dairy Council has had such a positive impact on me and my drive to pursue my future career. It would be unfair to pin one single experience as my favorite because every moment I have spent with this team as been so positive and influential, but also fun. The individuals I have met here at the Idaho Dairy Council love what they do and through their motivation, action, and community, they are able to give back in every way I could see. I will forever be thankful for their willingness to pay it forward to their community.
